Everything you need to know and do to become a certified high school volleyball official in Maine can be found on this website.
The Maine Association of Volleyball Officials is approved by the Maine Principals Association as the exclusive volleyball officials association in Maine, and our officials referee all high school matches in the state of Maine. Many of our members also officiate college (NCAA), and club (USAV) volleyball. Our officials have the opportunity to referee volleyball from September through May, and can work as much as they want, depending on their availability.
The rate of pay per high school volleyball assignment is the highest among sports officials in Maine. In 2024, each assignment started at $166.50, plus $.50 per mile (Varsity: $95/JV: $71.50 doubleheader). Some assignments can also include a Freshman match, which will add $71.50 to the starting rate.

The training committee will be sending out communication to all potential new officials who are on our list for the 5th Annual MAVO Rookie Camp. MAVO has had a lot of success with the rookie camp, recruiting over 30 officials the past 4 years. We wanted to reach out to all current members and ask if you know of anyone who would like to officiate volleyball next season and please have them email mavomaine@gmail.com so we can get them on our radar. We are hoping those who love the sport can spread the word on how great it is to officiate volleyball.
MAVO/Maine Principals Association Liaison Mike Roux, has created an informative Power Point Presentation for all of the potential obstacles found in gyms where high school volleyball is being played in Maine.
The obstacle paragraph will inform you how to handle each school's obstacles so we should NOT have different interpretations of how to handle them. The second paragraph is labeled 'Comments' and states: Review Obstacles At The Pre-match Meeting. What you should do is review with your officiating team (before pre-match if possible) and then review with the participants in the pre-match meeting.
