"MAVO with its offered Rookie Camp, the on-site summer training at the ME Sports Arena, and preseason tourneys/scrimmages, prepares the new volleyball official to officiate their first official match effectively, as either the R1 or the R2. The training content and opportunity puts to shame any of training that I have received in the past as an 18-year softball and a 9-year soccer official. Well done and much appreciated."

The 2026 MAVO Rookie Officials Boot Camp will be scheduled for March. Date, time, and location for this event is pending and will be posted by January 1. This typically is an all-day event beginning around 9 a.m. and concluding around 3 p.m. Lunch is provided.
Anyone with an interest in becoming a certified Maine high school volleyball official for the 2026 season and beyond is invited to attend this important first-step gathering. Space is limited. Preregistration is strongly recommended.
The MAVO Rookie Officials Boot Camp is where new officials can learn about the job of officiating volleyball at the high school level, and topics include all of the steps in becoming a certified volleyball official; mandatory requirements; exam/testing; equipment and uniforms; expectations; volleyball culture; professionalism; mechanics; rules, and more.
MAVO trainers will be on hand to help facilitate the discussions and answer questions from prospective officials to help better assist those who would like to know more, and those who have already decided to begin the training and certification process. The morning session is in a classroom setting, while the afternoon session will be on a volleyball court.
Even if you have no prior experience as a volleyball player or officiating sports in general, this event is for you. Less than half of the officials currently working matches in Maine have previous competitive volleyball experience.
As with everything in life, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. MAVO does an outstanding job in preparing new officials each season, and our training is among the best for all officials in every sport played at the high school level in Maine. Those who take advantage of the many training opportunities, and through their attendance demonstrate a desire to be the best they can be, are usually the most successful. Becoming a skilled volleyball official at any level requires a strong commitment to training.
