UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT
HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED:
UNIFORM (unless noted as optional, these items are required.)
NOTE: MAVO uniforms do not meet the mandatory uniforms as described in the NFHS rule book. With Maine Principals Association approval, our uniforms match those of PAVO and USAV. This saves our officials hundreds of dollars when they make the decision to officiate at the collegiate and club levels.
- Navy blue slacks/dress pants
- Navy blue or black leather belt
- All white leather gym shoes (logo may have color)
- White socks (not ankle length)
- Certified Volleyball Officials shirt(s) (only OFFICIAL monogrammed shirts allowed; see logo to the left)
- White (long or short sleeve) (White is the default. This is the only color that is mandatory. All officials must have at least a white officials shirt.)
- Grey (long or short sleeve) (Recommended but OPTIONAL)
- Cyan Blue (long or short sleeve) (Recommended but OPTIONAL)
- Certified white OFFICIAL monogrammed sweater (OPTIONAL)
DO NOT wear a long sleeve undershirt under your short sleeve uniform shirt. If you need long sleeves you must wear the licensed long sleeve officials shirt.
EQUIPMENT
- Small, plain, navy, or black gear bag (large enough to contain all of the equipment listed below:
- Black or white whistle (recommended FOX40 or similar pea-less whistle) with matching lanyard
- Digital watch or time keeping device able to time with seconds.
- Current NFHS Rule book and case book
- Copy of the current MPA Volleyball Bulletin
- Small Ball pump
- Pressure gauge (must be able to measure 4.2-4.6 psi.)
- Net measuring chain
- Tossing coin (approximately silver dollar size with distinct heads and tails)
- Red and Yellow volleyball sanction cards w/case
- Red line Judge flags
- MAVO patch (worn on the upper right chest of uniform shirt)
- A good set of ear plugs is recommended for work as R1
NOTES:
- MAVO uniforms do not meet the mandatory uniforms as described in the NFHS rule book. Our uniforms match those of PAVO and USAV.
- Net measuring chain should be suitable for women's and men's height net
- Whistle and lanyard should match.
- A good option for a whistle is one with a cushioned mouth grip (rubber).
- Having an extra whistle or two is a good idea. Clean your whistles several times during each season.
- Ball gauge must be able to accurately measure between 4.2 and 4.6 psi.
- Some manufacturers make a combination pump/gauge.
- Red line judge flags (must be between 12 x 12" and 16 x 16").
- Digital watch with timer, or countdown function is required.
- MAVO patch must be worn on the upper right chest (patch can be sewn on {not recommended}, affixed with Velcro, or with magnets.)
- NFHS rule/case books are provided to MAVO members through their registration/dues.
- A good pair of long-lasting, comfortable shoes is essential to your comfort during every assignment.

MAVO does not require you to use any of these listed vendors for your equipment or uniform items, however there is only one vendor that is licensed to sell the official CERTIFIED VOLLEYBALL OFFICIALS shirts, so you must purchase your shirts and any CERTIFIED VOLLEYBALL OFFICIALS outerwear (sweaters/sweatshirts) from this vendor.
There are a number of other good vendors for the purchase of your volleyball equipment items. If you deal with any vendors not listed here that you're satisfied with, please let the webmaster know so we can add them to our approved vendors list.
- NOTE: Just as with any product, there are cheap brands and brands that sell a much more durable product. It may be more cost effective to spend the extra money upfront to get a longer-lasting product.
